Jugend dirigiert

A CONCEPT
FOR LIFE

Music is a universal language that everyone understands. At “Jugend Dirigiert” (Youth Conductors), children and teenagers learn to take on responsibility through classical music. As conductors, they lead an orchestra and learn to rely on their ears and instincts. Under the guidance of professional musicians from the Berlin Philharmonic and music educator Dr. Alexander Saier, they develop skills in nonverbal communication and conducting.

Since 2015, Jugend Dirigiert has brought individuals as young as six years old to the conductor’s podium. Participants learn to influence the orchestra with every gesture and movement. Regular rehearsals with musicians from the Berlin Philharmonic focus on learning without pressure. Mistakes do not exist – every uncertainty is embraced as part of the learning process.

Participants choose their favorite pieces, spanning from early classical works to film scores. In collaboration with the Herbert von Karajan Academy, student conductors gain valuable experiences in a relaxed and supportive environment. Several concerts are held annually, including performances at the Berliner Philharmonie (most recently in October 2024).

The work of Jugend Dirigiert fosters connections among the participants and with music itself. To continue funding this unique project, we warmly welcome support. Visit us and experience firsthand the impact of Jugend Dirigiert.

COURAGE FOR NEW EXPERIENCES

THE ORCHESTRA

Founded to bring fresh energy to Berlin’s music scene, the Haupstadt Symphony Orchestra (The Capitol City Symphony Orchestra), or HSO, serves as a unique platform for young professional musicians from 18 Nations around the globe.

Open to innovative projects and extraordinary experiences, the orchestra provides an ideal environment for collaboration to children, teenagers, and young adults through initiatives like Jugend Dirigiert.

The HSO was established in 2015 by Dr. Alexander Saier with the vision of creating an exceptional ensemble for emerging talent. Many of the members are current or past academists from the best orchestras around Berlin and Europe. The orchestra combines the expertise of these academy programs, offering particularly gifted young musicians the opportunity to prepare for the unique challenges of their current and future careers.
